Chapter 12-16
1. King Solomon was a man who was smart and powerful over the people. One day two woman came up to him with a kid saying that they were both the mother. The king then says that he could split the kid in half. The mother said that she'd rather give up the kid than watch the child be sliced in half . Huck understands why the King kept urging it, but Jim didn't. He didn't understand why the king would have said something like this.
2. In the chapter, Huck told Jim about the fog joke tells him how it was not real. Jim realizes that Huck was lying and goes off on Huck and his feeling were hurt because Jim actually thought that Huck had died. Later, Huck went to Jim to apologize about what had happened.
3. I think that Jim is always superstitious because Jim had been a slave all his life and doesn't believe in miracles. Nothing has happened to Jim where something good has happen.
4. In the sentence Huck calls Jim the n word but Jim didn't take it to heart because that's what people called black people. That would was very commonly used back then.
5. Huck feels like he is struggling because he still doesn't know if hes going to commit to helping the slaves. When the men asked where the slaves were Huck says he doesn't know where they are and after they leave he feels guilty on not telling the truth.

1.Describe the Grangerford family (Chapter 17 &18).
The Grangerford family has some beef with shepherdsons family. Apparently there was a gun fight between Buck, which is a kid from the Grangerford family and a boy from the shepherdsons family and they both die from the gunshots. No one from the Grangerford family can remember how the beef started.
2.Mark Twain alludes that the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is about traditional feuds between farmer (“granger”) and rancher (“shepherd”). Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time (Chapter 18)?
In the story Huck narrates the story and he talks about how the 2 families have major beef. He explains that Buck on the Grangerford side tried to shoot Harney Shepherdson but he missed the shot. Huck was very confused over the fact this the story was quite confusing and asks how the beef started and he came to the conclusion that this beef is been going on for a lot of time and no one really knows how it started. He probably wrote about it because back in the 1800s there was beef like this where families were crazy over nothing really. Farmers and Ranchers had a lot of beef.
3.Toward the end of chapter 18 Huck says “I don’t want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I’ll cut it pretty short.” Huck says this prior to telling us about the big battle. How does our narrator’s perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section (Chapter 18)?
When Huck says this line which is “I don’t want to talk much about the next day. I reckon I’ll cut it pretty short.” We all start to figure that Huck is sad and not that happy. When people have something bad happen to them it’s probably hard for them to get through it.
4.Explain who the King and the Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story (Chapter 19)?
SO basically the King and Duke are runaway frauds that hijack Huck and jim's raft. The King says that he's the disappeared heir and Duke says hes the Duke of Bridgewater. But Huck goes along with there feud so he wouldn't cause any trouble.
5.What problems do you anticipate with the Duke’s solution to how they can all run the raft during the day (Chapter 20)?
While Huck and Jim are on the raft they come up with a solution to not get caught. They label Jim as a runaway slave that is returning to his owner. This could be very risky because they could be questioned on why they have him and could possibly get in major trouble.
6.Illustrate the town that the play will be held in (Chapter 21).

Huck Finn 22-26
1. The line at the bottom of the book was, "Low Brow Comedy Show xxx!" This line works because it persuaded people that they going into the play and that nothing bad will happen in the next show. The king and the duke then perform their "Shakespeare" to a group of people. They didn't like the show very much.
2. Huck Thinks telling Jim about Kings and Dukes would be pointless and wouldn't do Jim any good. I also think that Jim misses his family as much as white people.
When Huck said "You couldn't tell from the real thing", he means The fake ones are exactly the same and their really isn't a way to determine the difference.
3. Huck feels this way because the King and the Duke are playing the parts of the dead mans brother. They Both go around town and announce to everyone that the brother died before they arrived. The Duke is playing the Part of a dead mans brothers and hes also deaf. Huck doesn't even know if he is even dead or not.

Chapters 27-30
- During this time period staying up with the dead was a tradition. They stayed up with the dead to keep rodents away from the body. Back then, there were no funeral homes to preserve the body before it entered the grave. It was up to relatives or close friends to preserve the body.
- When Huck tells miss Mary Jane about the separated slave family that they will be reunited again within the next two weeks it gives us as the reader another perspective on Huck. Huck has gone through a lot. He was raised by an abusive alcoholic father and has run away from this widow and through all this, protecting a runaway slave. Jim is Huck's best friend and hes changed Huck's point of view on slaves and on black people which is a good thing.
- A lawyer gets all four men to meet at the Tavern to find out who they really are . First, he has all four men sign a paper then compares the signatures to ones he had seen on the letters, which gave away that the King and the Duke were frauds and not who they said they were. The King got out of the ordeal by saying that the real William serves as a scribe to Harvey and William has a broken arm so they can't prove it. The real Harvey remembers that their brother had a tattoo on his chest and the King did say that he did see a tattoo. Then the lawyer asks them what the tattoo was and the one who dressed the body tells them which one is right.
Chapters 30-35
- Jim has been found, captured and turned in as a runaway slave. Huck shocked becomes very upset and tries to think what he can do to change the situation. Huck is crying and panicking but he thinks if he should write to Miss Watson about where Jim is and get Jim back to her. Huck prays that Jim finds Miss Watson again but remembers he really cant pray a lie, he was praying for what he didn't want.
- Huck's letter lets Miss Watson know where Jim is and how to get him back. during the start of this conflict , getting Jim back to Miss Watson was not what he wanted. Also the letter would've shed light on how Huck lied, faked his death and ran away with a runaway slave named Jim. Huck tears up the letter because he didn't want Jim to go back to being a slave
- Tom Sawyer is good, he is a good curious man who is just wanting to help out a friend. Huck did get Tom Sawyer to help him steal Jim back and so if he thinks its bad what Tom Sawyer is doing, why did Huck get him into it
- Huck and Tom sneak out of the house and go into town. As they are on their way, they see a mob of townspeople as well as the Duke and the dauphin and are covered in tar and feathers. Huck feels bad for the two when he states, “Human beings can be awful cruel to one another. But that’s always the way; it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t go no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” He states that because even though the Duke was a fraud and didn't deserve the best, the townspeople were cruel to him which doesn't make the townspeople any better then the Duke.
- Tom is a big risk taker and tries to be the best he can be. Huck is different. It's easy to notice Huck has been through a lot and Tom is wanting a more complicated escape for Jim. For some reason, Tom likes the complicated situations while Huck just agrees to do what ever tom is doing and Tom being a good friend is helping Huck for Jim's escape.
Chapters 36-40
- Huck's motivation is simple. He really wants to get Jim out. Jim has been on Huck's side this whole book and Huck has feelings for him and really cares about Jim. As for Tom, he just wants to make everything adventurous. Hes willing to take those chances. Tom really doesn't care about Jim's rescue but likes to tag along.
- When the Phrase "we let on it took nine months to make it" is said by Huck and Tom, I think they mean that they caved in to the journey. They were kinda led into it to save Jim and help Jim as a runaway slave. It gives us as the reader a view at what the characters are saying and thinking.
- Uncle Silas tells Aunt Sally that Jim had run away and she began to panic because apparently their house is wild and no one has control over it. Tom writes letters to the family under the name of "an unknown friend", the letters that were sent out to the family scare them and states that they could be in trouble. Tom then pretends in one letter that Jim is going to be taken and explains to the family on how Jim plans on being stolen.
- Satire is making fun on reality and we see satire when Huck and tom help Jim escape. Huck wants to make the escape easy and Tom wants to make it hard and complicated. In reality, it would be hard to have Jim escape. So many things can go wrong during the escape. The book makes it seem easy and hard to believe that they would pull it off.
- I think that Huck means that Jim has a heart. When Huck says " I knowed he was white inside" he mean that Jim has a heart for Tom because Jim refused for the boat to go until they got Tom a doctor. Jim thinks that Tom would probably do the same for him.
Chapters 41- end
- Starting from the beginning. Huck goes to town because he needs to find a doctor for Tom because he got shot in the calf. He runs into Uncle Silas. He takes Huck back to the house and tells a lie on why they were away. Huck told Aunt sally that he was going to sleep, she followed him to his room. She tucks Huck in. But he really doesn't like it and feel very guilty that Hes sleeping in a bed while Tom was in pain and danger.
- I feel like Jim has grown on Huck more and surprisingly Tom too. When Tom got injured, Jim immediately said that we need a doctor for Tom and helped the doctor also. From the whole book we can see that Jim has shown empathy for others and that's a good thing.
- When Tom wakes up from being treated, he tells everyone that miss Watson died 2 months ago and Jim was already free when she died. This goes to show that Tom is always up for an adventure because he was willing to keep it a secret that she died so he could get the thrill of adventure.
- Huck is a genuine guy. He not always up for an adventure and getting fancy with helping Jim escape but he will help anyone. Huck has a heart and for people that are not the same skin color as him. I feel like as he gets older he will be more genuine.
